San Francisco lawyer Stephen Joseph has filed a lawsuit to ban the sale of Oreos to children living in California. At the heart of the suit is Joseph's crusade against trans fat, also known as partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. He also started the nonprofit corporation BanTransFats.com, Inc., and created T-shirts with the message: "Don't Partially Hydrogenate Me."

The lawsuit calls for an injunction prohibiting Kraft Foods from selling its Nabisco Oreo Cookies. Like most cookies, Oreos are produced with partially hydrogenated vegetable oil that creates deadly trans-fatty acids.

Trans fat is contained in approximately 40 percent of the food items in grocery stores. Extensive research has linked trans fat with heart disease. The Food and Drug Administration wants food manufacturers to list trans fat on food packages, but a final ruling on this has not yet been made. Joseph said his lawsuit is different from the lawsuits brought against tobacco companies because, "Tobacco is well known as an unsafe product. Trans fat is not the same thing at all. Very few people know about it."

On Thursday, September 26, 2002, Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va. dropped the following bombshell.

Byrd addressed the Senate, “We have a paper trail,” Byrd said. “We not only know that Iraq has biological weapons, we know the type, the strain, and the batch number of the germs that may have been used to fashion those weapons." Byrd further stated, “We have in our hands the equivalent of a Betty Crocker cookbook of ingredients that the U.S. allowed Iraq to obtain and that may well have been used to concoct biological weapons.”

It is very disturbing to now know that our own government did this. Byrd then revealed more of this stupidity of our own government, "Between 1985 and 1988, the nonprofit American Type Culture Collection made 11 shipments to Iraq that included a “witches’ brew of pathogens,” including anthrax, botulinum toxin and gangrene. All shipments were government-approved. Between January 1980 and October 1993, the federal Centers for Disease Control shipped a variety of toxic specimens to Iraq, including West Nile virus and Dengue fever." Bryd then continued giving more details of this horrible act of our own government.

Byrd then continued, "The U.S. Commerce Department and CDC provided lists of these shipments. The Defense Department ought to have the same lists, so that the decision-makers will know exactly what types of biological agents American soldiers may face in the field. We know the dates they were shipped and the addresses to which they were shipped. Will Saddam Hussein unleash botulinum toxin, perhaps nature’s deadliest poison, and other viruses and chemicals if the United States attacks Iraq?" Byrd then told and asked his fellow Senators.

Byrd then criticized Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld for failing to answer questions he asked last week about these shipments to Iraq during an Armed Services Committee hearing. Rumsfeld refused to answer the questions.

At last week’s Armed Services Committee hearing, Secretary Rumsfeld said, "I have no knowledge of any such shipments and doubted that they ever occurred." Rumsfeld seemed aggrevated to have to admit at the very idea that the United States would ever countenance entering into such a deal with the devil.

Senator Byrd has remarked, “Secretary Rumsfeld should not shy away from this information. On the contrary, he should seek it out.”

Newsweek magazine published in its' September 23, 2002 issue, an article discussing the viruses, poisons and gases that the U.S. sent to Saddam Hussein in the mid-1980s. At that time, the U.S. regarded Iraq as a potential ally against Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeni.

Who were the Presidents during these time periods? President Reagan and President Bush. Prior to becoming President, Bush was the CIA Director under President Reagan. So, the question is, is the present President Bush trying to clean up what his father did in error?

Calls to the White House press office by various press media on Thursday afternoon were referred to the Department of Defense, where no one returned a call. One woman at the White House asked, “How do you spell Byrd?” Good grief, a Department of Defense employee does not know who Senator Byrd is?

What is shocking about these new findings is that both Federal documents and a United Nations Security Council report document a direct connection between periods when Iraq received toxins and viruses from the U.S. and the periods when Iraq developed biological weapons with the help of these U.S. supplied biological agents.

Byrd ended his speech by making this statement and asking his fellow Senators the following.

“The role that the U.S. played in helping Iraq to pursue biological warfare in the 1980s should serve as a strong warning to the president that policy decisions regarding Iraq today could have far reaching ramifications on the Middle East and on the United States in the future. In the 1980s, the Ayatollah Khomeni was America’s sworn enemy, and the U.S. government courted Saddam Hussein in an effort to undermine the Ayatollah and Iran. Today, Saddam Hussein is America’s biggest enemy, and the U.S. is said to be making overtures to Iran. The Bush administration is also discussing whether to arm groups of ethnic dissidents, such as the Kurds, in Iraq. Could the U.S. be laying the groundwork for a brutal civil war in Iraq? Could this proposed policy change precipitate a deadly border conflict between the Kurds and Turkey?” Byrd asked.

Senator Byrd then again urged caution. “Decisions involving war and peace, should never be rushed or muscled through in haste. Our founding fathers understood that, and wisely vested that decision to the Congress, not the president, the power to declare war.”

Byrd then emphasized that Congress must consider Bush’s requests for new war powers “carefully, thoroughly, and on our own timetable, and avoid the pressure to rush to judgment on such an important matter.”

Thank God we have a Senator that has the courage to finally start asking the right questions. What I find so ironic about this is the fact that the U.S. itself supplied the very biologicals weapons to Hussein that we are now wanting to go to war with him over. Talk about not only being stupid, but if you look at it, very hypocritical. The powers to be under President Reagan and President George Bush Sr. made the mistake then. It should never had been approved. Do you realize that by our giving Hussein these biological weapons in the 1980's, it is these same weapons he used to kill his own people, innocent women and children in northern Iraq during this period and countless thousands of Iranians. We as a nation, must accept the responsibility we played in this mass murder. We must not go to war with Iraq until all avenues have been exhausted through the United Nations.

Thanks to the actions of two past Presidents, one being the father of our present President, we are paying the price today with Hussein having biological weapons of mass destruction. Do you really understand what our own government created. It created this "evil" of biological weapons in Husseins' hands. The "evil" that President Bush speaks about today, part of that evil was placed there by his own father by allowing the shipment of biological weapons to Iraq when President. I wonder how many skeletons from the past are going to jump out of the closet at us next? Thank you Senator Byrd, at last an honest politician that is disclosing the truth when hardly any are. My last question is this. Who should truly he held accountable for Iraq having biological weapons...is it not our own government and two past Presidents?

Bush, Putin, Oil, But Our Own Renewable Energy Sources Are Right Here

The friendship that President Bush is striking up with President Putin of Russia has me concerned. It is being said that Russia has now become our ally. That things have changed in Russia, that is has become a democracy. This is far from the truth. When critics in the free press a couple of years ago started critizing Putin on some issues, he shut free and independent newspapers and radio stations down. So why is Bush doing this? Oil! Russia has tremendous oil reserves, some estimates as much as Saudi Arabia. Bush thinks by becoming friendly with Putin and making Russia our ally that we can will have access to this oil and not be dependent on Arab oil. He could be correct, but at what price we will have to pay down the road. I do not trust Putin. Russia is building and selling two nuclear reactors to Iran. Iran and Syria still provide money and support to terrorist groups. Bush in my mind is making a mockery of his own stand of not dealing with any country that supports terrorism. If we purchase billions of dollars of oil from Russia, this provides capital, money for them to build the nuclear reactors to sell to Iran. Is this not a round about way of supporting terrorism by the purchase of Russian oil. Am I not correct here or am I missing something? Instead, what the United States should be doing to become more energy independent is this.

About 8 percent of our energy came from renewable sources in 1999. This increased to 10% in 2000. However, only 1% of this renewable energy is coming from the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming. If the share of renewable energy in these states increased to just 20 percent, farmers, ranchers which are in poor financial shape would benefit in 170 million in lease payment for wind turbines. Carbon dixoide emissions from theregion's electrical placnts would fall by 40 percent. Carbon dixoide is the leading cause of global warming. A study in Colorado said that 2.4 billion in new investments and over 18,000 jobs could be seen by 2020. Actual studies indicate that as much as 30% of our energy requirements could come from renewable energy sources within our country. Presently, we get approximately 25% of our energy resources from Saudi Arabia. However, in President Bush's budgets, funds that were previously there to help in the building of these wind turbine farms has been cut. Some existing projects in Utah and California have been stopped. Now that you now this...what are your thoughts on what we should be doing instead of spending 1 billion dollars a day on a hopeless, non bearing fruit war in Afganistan?

I've said for years that 50% of illnesses, cold, flu could be avoid each year if we simply became cleaner. Well, a new study has proven by point. University of Arizona researchers found that the average office desk has over 400 times more bacteria than your toliet at home. And what has even more germs? Fax machines, telephones, computer keyboards. 7,000 samples were analyzed in work spaces in New York, Tucson, San Francisco and Tampa. New York had the most germs. Stop and think about it. How many times in the winter do you have co-workers come to work that are sick. Viruses and bacteria can live on surfaces up to 48 hours. If they are blowing their noses, sneezing on their hands and not washing them and then touch telephones, fax machines, doors, and especially bathroom doors at work places, all it takes is for you is to touch these surfaces and then touch your face, lips, nose and guess what, I can quarantee with almost certainty that you will come down with a cold. My advice and you may think this silly, take a can of Clorox disinfective spray to work. Spray telephones, fax machines, computer keyboards, door handles and even our desk work area at least 2-3 times a week. Studies in offices that workers do this have shown there is as much as 70% less colds, flus with the employees in that office. Try it - it works!

A recent Lousiana State University study shows that taking 250 mcg of folic acid daily will reduce your risk of developing colon cancer in men by 60% and in women by 75%. The researchers reasoning is that folic acid blocks DNA damage that leads to cancer. The american western diet does not provide enough folic acid daily. Dr. Willett at Harvard Research says that alcohol boosts colon cancer risk. If you want to eliminate this if you drink alcohol, he says to take 600mcg of folic acid daily. Personally I would settle in between 400mcg daily.

C-reactive protein is something that can elevate in your body. It is linked to inflammation. This simple in-expensive test was for some time not used by physicians. Soft plague buildup in the heart blood vessels can rupture, however, prior to this they become severel inflammed which will show up with a high CRP level. At first, some studies showed high levels of CRP in the blood of people that died suddenly from heart attacks, or those that suffered a heart attack. Sixteen studies have now shown how useful this test can be in predicting heart attack. Cardiologist, Paul Ridker of Women's Hospital in Boston says that a CRP level above 2 mg/dl signals a high risk of a sudden death from heart attack. Anyone over fifty should have this test done at least twice a year.

Bacterial Back Pain

If you suffer from serious back pain, that pain could actually be an infecticious microorganism. Researchers at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, England have reports that 43 out of 140 people that suffered from sciatica, pain running from the back into the legs actually were infected with this microorganism. Evidently, there are microscopic years in the spinal disks due to herniation that allow these microorgamism in. Course of treatment is anti-biotics. However, if these microscopic tears remain, repeated infection by microrganism may occur, so period treatment with anti-biotics may have to be done for chronic sciatica sufferers. At least though this is now a treatment that provides relief for these suffereres.

Mother's Milk Versus Breast Milk

I've said for years that breast milk is the best choice to feed newborns for many reasons. A recent study published in Journal of American Medicine shows that babies that were breast fed for seven to nine months had higher IQ's that those breast feed two months or less and switched to formula. The average increase was 6 points, some as uch as 12. The average IQ is 100 so this is significant. They also found the babies had less illnesses of colds, etc.
